Native Waters Home

This will be my second boatbuilding project, the 16' Gardner Skiff.

Designed by reknowned maritime historian and boat designer and builder John Gardner, it is featured in his book "More Classic Small Craft You Can Build." Originally a type of Northeastern boat known as a clamming skiff, it was adapted for outboard use as a stout and stable utility vessel, such as for fishing.

Here's one builder's version of the boat:

The parts shown below are the frames, transom and stem that I have constructed so far. They are made of antique salvaged Douglas fir, with epoxy used as an adhesive, and fastened with galvanized screws.

The pages that will follow as the building progresses will chronicle the boat from start to finish and launching.
